So having defeated Everton 3-0 in the league on Sunday, Chelsea Women have been paired with the Toffees in the SSE Women’s FA Cup fourth round in the draw made on Monday morning. While tough, it could have been far harder.
Meanwhile the men have a home tie in the fourth round against either Luton or Sheffield Wednesday.
Although the women struggled back in September on their last visit to Merseyside, when they were held to a draw, the manner of the win on Sunday afternoon at Kingsmeadow, and the sheer dominance of the Chelsea team in terms of possession and chance-creation, means that the visit north on Sunday February 3 should hold no fears.
Chelsea are the Women’s FA Cup holders, beating Arsenal at the end of last season at Wembley in front of a record 45,423, and would dearly love to retain the trophy with the league title looking less and less likely – despite the current impressive run of form.
In the fourth round, Birmingham City, the 2012 winners, travel to Yeovil Town; Leicester host London Bees; Brighton entertain Manchester United and Millwall face Lewes, with a London derby between Championship teams Palace and Tottenham Hotspur.
Arsenal have been drawn away to Crawley Wasps in what looks like the whimsical round of the day.
Meanwhile the men, who face Spurs tonight at Wembley in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semis, have drawn either Sheffield Wednesday, currently 16th in the Championship, or Luton – second in League One – in the FA Cup, at Stamford Bridge. Both teams were defeated by the Blues en route to reaching the final in 1994.
Sheffield Wednesday and Luton drew 0-0 on Saturday, with the replay next Tuesday at Kenilworth Road.
